The work was done using an iphone 4S, snapshots done with an app called MasterpieceMe and Instagram. The result was shown in this format on facebook on the page of the artist Joao Vilhena between June 2013 and August. It was followed by two other series : Historical Selfies and 90's Selfies. In the historical Selfies the followers had to guess daily whom the author was, and the 90's selfies was done a facebook Exquisite corpse in which players write in turn on the comment box building together the identity of the characters presented . All the series can be seen on instagram and facebook and have ended in 2013. For the Project I/O curated by António Cerveira Pinto @ Galeria Luis Serpa Projects in 2014 it had been done a new set of choices that question What is photography ? Or as A.Cerveira Pinto puts it:
"Almost a decade and a half into the 21st century, and thirty years after I co-curated After Modernism (Lisbon, 1983), with Luís Serpa, Michel Toussaint Alves Pereira, Ricardo Pais, Ribeiro da Fonte and many others, I'm still wandering about a few old questions from then. Are there any happy dichotomies still around? I don't think so. Is modern art and modernism over or not? My answer to this question is a straightforward yes. Post-modernism is also dead. Today we live in what I would call, in a kind of homage to Jean François Lyotard, a post-contemporary condition. With luck, it will be the beginning of a new renaissance, whose outlines, however, are still tenuous.
To develop some intuition phenomenology around this, I decided to start a series of exhibitions, publications and debates about this post-contemporary condition, through some artists and works that may help us to understand what is happening.
Joao Vilhena is my third choice for this art ‘investigation’ on late 20th Century and the beginning of 21st Era. "
The author continues to do iphonography and extending the possibilities of painting and photography working with teams of programers worldwide and sharing it on tumblr, flickr, facebook and instagram.
"Every new software is a new possibility." Joao Vilhena, 2000 (On the use of Poser software while studying with Wayne Mcgregor on Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian : "Body Mediated by Technology")
